How They Work: The Chemistry
Reactive Dyes — Covalent Bond
Reactive dyes form a covalent chemical bond with the cellulose fibre. The dye molecule reacts directly with the hydroxyl groups (-OH) in cotton under alkaline conditions, creating a permanent chemical attachment. This is the strongest type of dye-fibre bond possible.
The result: the dye becomes part of the fibre structure. It cannot be washed out under normal laundering conditions. This is why reactive dyes such as Reactive Black 5 and Reactive Red 120 are the standard choice for apparel, fashion textiles, and any application where the item will be washed repeatedly.
Direct Dyes — Physical Attraction
Direct dyes do not bond chemically with the fibre. Instead, they are held in place by weaker physical forces — Van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds — between the dye molecule and the cellulose chain. The dye molecules "sit" in the fibre rather than being chemically attached.
Because the bond is physical rather than chemical, direct dyes are easier to wash out. This means lower wash fastness — but it also means simpler application: no alkali fixation required, lower processing temperatures, and a more straightforward dye bath.

When to Choose Reactive Dyes
Choose reactive dyes when:

Choose direct dyes when:
- You are dyeing paper — direct dyes are the standard for paper colouring
- Cost is the primary constraint and wash fastness requirements are modest
- You are dyeing jute, hessian, or coarse natural fibres
- Your substrate or process cannot handle alkaline conditions
- You need a simpler process with fewer steps and lower energy use
- The end product will not be repeatedly washed (industrial textiles, packaging)
Can Direct Dye Fastness Be Improved?
Yes. The most effective method is after-treatment with a cationic fixing agent. The cationic fixative forms a complex with the direct dye on the fibre surface, making it harder to wash out. This can raise wash fastness from a 3 to a 4, which is acceptable for many applications.
However, cationic after-treatment can sometimes slightly alter the shade (particularly with blacks and navy blues) and may reduce light fastness slightly. Test before committing to full production.
Which Substrates Work With Each?
Reactive dyes work on all cellulosic fibres: cotton, viscose, linen, modal, lyocell, and bamboo. They also work on silk, though acid dyes are usually preferred for silk.
Direct dyes work on cotton, viscose, linen, jute, and paper. They are not suitable for synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon, acrylic) or protein fibres (wool, silk).
