It comes down to application requirements. If you need wash fastness above 4, reactive dyes are the answer — no argument there. But where the wash fastness specification is 3–4, as it is for a range of home furnishing fabrics, paper, jute, and lower-priced cotton goods, direct dyes offer a simpler process, no alkali fixation, and lower overall cost per kilo dyed. Direct Blue 290 in liquid form removes even the dissolution complexity from the picture.

Cotton, viscose, rayon, linen, jute, and paper are the primary substrates. It does not dye polyester or synthetic fibres. For wool or nylon, acid dyes are the correct class — direct dyes can give some colour on these fibres, but fastness is poor and not suitable for commercial use.

The active dye content is lower by weight in liquid form compared to powder, because the liquid contains water. Always refer to the batch TDS for the specific dye content percentage — this value is what you use to calculate the volume of liquid needed to achieve a given % owf. Do not substitute powder dosage figures directly for the liquid without this conversion.
