Trade Name: DIRECT BLUE 14 LIQ. · CI Number: Direct Blue 290
Direct Blue 290 sits in a useful position in the direct dye range — it gives a clean, medium blue shade on cotton and viscose without the process complexity that reactive dyeing demands. No alkali, no elevated fixation temperature beyond the standard 90–100°C boil, and no covalent bonding chemistry to manage. That simplicity is the point. For applications where a reliable, consistent blue is needed and the wash fastness requirement falls in the 3–4 range, direct dyes like this are still the practical, cost-effective answer.
What makes the liquid format specifically useful is process consistency. Powder direct dyes can be unpredictable if dissolution is rushed or water temperature is off — you get undissolved particles in the bath, which means unlevel strike and shade variation. The liquid form is already pre-dispersed at a known concentration, so every batch starts from the same baseline. For continuous dyeing lines and automated dosing systems, this is not a minor convenience — it directly affects right-first-time yield. Yobai Industries supplies this grade as DIRECT BLUE 14 LIQ., checked for concentration consistency at every batch.

Direct dyes bond physically with cellulose. Wash fastness is inherently lower than reactive dyes — cationic fixative after-treatment is strongly recommended for garment and apparel applications where repeated washing is expected.

Because Direct Blue 290 is supplied as a pre-dispersed liquid, there is no powder dissolution step. This is its main operational advantage — you add it directly to the dye bath or dilute to working concentration with water. That said, a few handling points matter. Always mix with water before adding to the bath; adding the liquid concentrate directly to a near-full bath without premixing can cause uneven strike in the first few minutes, particularly on knitwear.
For automated dosing lines, verify the concentration of the liquid against the batch TDS before setting dosing pump parameters. Concentration can vary slightly between batches — always use the batch-specific value, not a generic assumption. Shake or stir the container before use if the liquid has been stored for an extended period, as some settling can occur in liquid direct dye concentrates.
Values are for cotton exhaust dyeing at liquor ratio 1:10–1:15, 90–100°C. Dye quantity is expressed as % owf (on weight of fabric). NaCl aids exhaustion — add in 2 stages for level results.
| Shade Depth | Dye (%owf) | NaCl (g/L) | pH | Temp (°C) | Time (min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pale Blue | 0.3–0.7% | 10–15 | 7–8 | 90–100 | 30–40 |
| Medium Blue | 1–2% | 15–20 | 7–8 | 90–100 | 45 |
| Deep Blue | 2.5–4% | 20–30 | 7–9 | 90–100 | 45–60 |
| Navy / Dark Blue | 4–6% | 25–35 | 8–9 | 90–100 | 60 |

The following shade depths are achievable on mercerised cotton under standard exhaust conditions. Actual appearance varies with fibre preparation and water quality.
Request a lab dip for colour-critical applications. Shade character is a clean blue with no significant green or violet undertone.
Supplied in sealed HDPE containers. Custom packaging and private labelling available for bulk buyers. All containers include batch number and manufacturing date.
All shipments include batch-specific COA. Export packing available on request.
Store in a cool location at 5–30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Freezing must be avoided — liquid direct dye concentrates can undergo irreversible separation if frozen, and there is no recovery once the dispersion breaks. Keep containers sealed between uses. Avoid storing near strong acids, oxidising agents, or bleaching compounds, all of which degrade direct dyes. In warm climates, covered indoor storage with temperature control is strongly preferred over outdoor or unshaded warehousing.
