As an anionic direct dye, it exhausts onto cellulosic fibres from a neutral electrolyte bath without the need for acid or alkali additions, making bath management straightforward even in high-volume dyehouses where pH control resources are limited.

DIRECT YELLOW 3SD delivers a clean, saturated golden yellow with good levelness on cotton and viscose. Its neutral application conditions tolerate the typical water hardness and slight pH variability encountered in industrial operations. The dye performs well both as a standalone yellow and as a base component in combination recipes — blended with Direct Blue 71 or Direct Blue 85 for warm olive greens, and with Direct Orange 39 or Direct Red grades for deep amber and orange shades. This versatility makes it a stock item in most cotton-dyeing operations handling a wide colour range.

In paper dyeing, DIRECT YELLOW 3SD dissolves well in hot water and is compatible with standard paper-making auxiliaries. Use either NaCl or Na₂SO₄ as electrolyte — not both simultaneously. Na₂SO₄ gives a gentler strike rate, preferred for knits and loose structures prone to streakiness.

Direct Yellow 142 is used to dye cotton, viscose, jute, and paper in bright yellow and golden yellow shades. It is also used as a base component in multi-dye recipes for warm olive greens (blended with a direct blue), deep khaki, and amber or orange shades (blended with Direct Orange 39 or a Direct Red grade).

Exhaust dyeing on cotton: start at 40–50°C, add dye dissolved in hot water, then add NaCl (20–50 g/L depending on depth), raise temperature gradually to 90–100°C over 20–30 minutes, and hold at peak temperature for 45–60 minutes. Liquor ratio 1:10 to 1:20. No acid or alkali is required — maintain neutral pH 7–8 throughout. After dyeing, rinse with warm water followed by cold water. Apply a cationic fixing agent if wash durability is critical.

Yes. Direct Yellow 142 dissolves well in hot water and is compatible with standard paper-making auxiliaries. For beater addition, pre-dissolve the dye in hot water (60–70°C) and add before sheet formation to achieve uniform bulk colouring.

At low concentrations (0.1–0.5% owf) the shade is a clear, bright lemon-straw yellow. As concentration increases to 2–4% owf, the shade shifts to a warmer golden amber. For a cooler, greener lemon yellow at any depth, add a small trace of Direct Blue 71 (0.05–0.1% owf) to counteract the warm undertone. Run a lab trial before committing to production scale, as the balance point varies with liquor ratio and water hardness.

Olive green and khaki shades are achieved by combining Direct Yellow 142 with a blue and/or black component. A typical warm olive green uses 60–70% Direct Yellow 142 with 25–35% Direct Blue 71 and a trace (2–5%) of Direct Black 22 to dull the shade and add depth. For a true khaki, increase the black component to 8–12% and reduce the blue proportion. Exhaust all components together in a single neutral pH bath — their compatible application conditions allow single-bath combination dyeing.

Direct Yellow 142 has a wash fastness of 3 (ISO 105-C06), which is standard for the direct dye class. For applications requiring higher wash durability — such as garments or home textiles — apply a cationic fixing agent after dyeing (typically 2–4% owf at 40°C for 20 minutes with mild agitation). This raises effective wash fastness by 0.5–1 grade and significantly reduces colour bleed during the first few washes.

Yes. Jute is a bast cellulosic fibre and takes direct dyes well under standard exhaust conditions. The same neutral bath (pH 7–8, NaCl 30–50 g/L, 90–100°C) applies. Adding a wetting agent (1–2 g/L) improves penetration through jute's coarser fibre structure and reduces unlevel dyeing. Jute often carries a slight natural brown base at pale depths — bleach-desizing jute before dyeing gives a cleaner, brighter yellow result for demanding applications.

Yes. Direct Yellow 142 is compatible with other anionic direct dyes at neutral pH. Common combinations include Direct Orange 39 for deep amber-orange, and Direct Blue 71 or Direct Blue 85 for greens. The key check is exhaustion compatibility — different direct dyes may have different strike rates, which can cause shade shifting during the run. Always conduct a lab trial at the intended liquor ratio and temperature program before moving to production scale.
