Where Direct Blue 71 is the standard for trichromatic exhaust dyeing on fabric, Direct Blue 85 steps in when the substrate geometry demands something more precise. Yarn package dyeing on cheese and cone, beam dyeing of warp, and thick knit constructions where liquor circulation is inherently uneven — these are the situations where DB85's superior migration resistance at 90–100°C shows up clearly in the result.
The shade character is a clean, brighter blue — slightly towards sky blue rather than the greenish-blue of DB71. That tone is well suited to furnishing fabrics, shirting, and decorative cotton where customers want a clear, open blue without depth or heaviness. Solubility is 30–50 g/L at 40–60°C — adequate for all practical shade depths. The standard pre-dissolution procedure applies: paste the powder in a small volume of cold water first, then bring up to 50–60°C with continuous stirring. Never add undissolved powder directly to the main bath. For package dyeing specifically, dissolution quality is more critical than for open-width fabric. Any undissolved particles that enter the package liquor can lodge in the yarn and create spot dyeing — filter through 100-mesh screen without exception.
For combination shades, dissolve each component separately before combining in the stock solution. Direct Blue 85 is compatible with anionic direct dyes in the same bath — verify compatibility in a lab trial with the specific combination before scaling up.
Values apply to both exhaust (fabric) and package (yarn) dyeing at liquor ratio 1:8–1:15. For package dyeing, use slower temperature ramp and add salt in 3 portions for level penetration.

Direct Blue 85 produces a clean, bright blue on mercerised cotton — clearer and less greenish than Direct Blue 71. Shade depth is controlled by dye concentration.
Shade appears brighter and cleaner than Direct Blue 71 — closer to a pure sky blue. Request a lab dip for colour-critical applications, particularly when matching shade cards.

Store below 30°C in a dry, covered location with relative humidity below 65%. Moisture absorption causes caking, which impairs dissolution and makes accurate weighing difficult — a problem that is more consequential in package dyeing where dosing precision directly affects inside-outside shade consistency. Seal containers immediately after every weighing. Keep away from acids, oxidising agents, and chlorine compounds. Avoid direct sunlight — prolonged UV exposure causes shade drift that cannot be corrected.
