Solubility & Dissolution Guidelines

Solubility is 30–50 g/L at 40–60°C — adequate for all practical shade depths. The standard pre-dissolution procedure applies: paste the powder in a small volume of cold water first, then bring up to 50–60°C with continuous stirring. Never add undissolved powder directly to the main bath. For package dyeing specifically, dissolution quality is more critical than for open-width fabric. Any undissolved particles that enter the package liquor can lodge in the yarn and create spot dyeing — filter through 100-mesh screen without exception.

For combination shades, dissolve each component separately before combining in the stock solution. Direct Blue 85 is compatible with anionic direct dyes in the same bath — verify compatibility in a lab trial with the specific combination before scaling up.

Package Dyeing Notes

  • Salt staging: Add NaCl in 3 equal portions over the first 30 minutes. This is more controlled than the 2-stage method used for fabric exhaust — even exhaustion through a compact package requires a slower electrolyte build-up.
  • Heating rate: Ramp to 90–100°C over 40–50 minutes for yarn packages. Faster ramp causes rapid, uneven strike that the migration period may not fully correct.
  • Migration period: After reaching 90–100°C, run at temperature for at least 20–30 minutes before evaluating shade. DB85's superior migration means it will continue redistributing and levelling during this period.
  • Cationic fixative: After dyeing and rinsing, treat with cationic fixative (2–3% owf, 40°C, 20 min) to improve wash fastness to 4 — recommended for apparel yarn applications.
