Among the direct reds, there is a clear split in shade character: scarlet reds with a warm, yellow-leaning tone, and deeper crimsons with a cooler, bluer tone. Direct Red 23 sits firmly in the scarlet category. That is the source of its broad utility — scarlet is commercially one of the most demanded red shades across cotton textiles, furnishing, and paper, and DR23 delivers it cleanly, consistently, and economically from a simple neutral salt bath with no mordant or alkali requirement. It is also the standard red component in trichromatic direct dyeing, paired with Direct Blue 71 and a yellow to produce a full range of shades by proportion.
On cotton and viscose, DR23 gives a bright, vivid scarlet with good levelness when the exhaustion is managed correctly. On paper, it is one of the most used reds for bulk pulp dyeing — red notebooks, tissue, gift wrap, and coloured packaging board are common end-uses. Light fastness of 4 makes it acceptable for most indoor applications. For outdoor or UV-exposed end-uses, or where deeper red and higher light fastness are required, Direct Red 79 is the alternative to evaluate. Fastness ratings on 1–5 scale (5 = best). LF 4 is adequate for most indoor textile and paper applications. For outdoor exposure, reactive red or a higher-fastness grade is recommended. Batch COA available on request.
Dissolves at 30–50 g/L at 40–60°C. Pre-paste the powder in cold water before raising to temperature — adding dry powder directly to a hot bath forms undissolved aggregates that deposit on fabric and produce spot dyeing. Stir continuously during dissolution and filter through an 80–100 mesh screen before adding to the dyebath. For trichromatic combination recipes, dissolve each dye component separately in its own vessel before combining into the stock solution — this prevents any cross-interaction during dissolution and allows accurate volumetric dosing of each component.
For paper pulp dyeing, dissolve in warm water (50°C) at a working concentration of 10–30 g/L and add to the pulp slurry in a controlled stream. Consistent metering of the dye solution is critical for even colour distribution in paper production.
Values apply to exhaust dyeing at liquor ratio 1:8–1:15. Add salt in 2–3 stages for even colour on knitwear. For paper, dosing is per tonne of dry fibre.

Shade is a warm scarlet on mercerised cotton — brighter and more vivid than deep crimson reds. Shade depth is adjusted by dye concentration.

Store below 30°C in a dry, covered location with relative humidity below 65%. Red dye powders absorb moisture and cake quickly when stored in humid conditions — caked material dissolves poorly and makes accurate weighing unreliable, which directly affects shade reproducibility. Reseal containers immediately after every weighing. Keep away from oxidising agents, bleaching compounds, and chlorine — these degrade the azo chromophore and cause irreversible shade shift. Keep out of direct sunlight.
