Direct Green 38 dissolves in hot water at 40–60°C, reaching 20–40 g/L depending on water hardness. Soft or demineralised water gives better dissolution. The dissolution process matters more for direct dyes than people sometimes assume — undissolved particles in the bath cause spotting that cannot be corrected without re-dyeing, especially on smooth viscose or fine cotton knit.

The right approach: make a cold-water paste first, then bring up to 50–60°C with continuous stirring until fully dissolved. Pass through a 100-mesh screen before adding to the exhaust bath. For paper applications, the dye can be dissolved at lower temperature (40–50°C) since paper processing temperatures are less demanding than exhaust dyeing.
