Reactive Blue 21 — Product Overview

Reactive Blue 21 is the only reactive dye that produces a true turquoise shade on cotton — a colour that cannot be achieved by blending blue and green reactives. Its unique phthalocyanine chemistry delivers an intensely bright turquoise with excellent wash fastness, making it indispensable for fashion, sportswear, and home textile applications. Supplied by Yobai Industries as REACTOBOND TURQUOISE BLUE G.

The copper phthalocyanine chromophore that gives REACTOBOND TURQUOISE BLUE G its distinctively stable turquoise hue also accounts for its slower diffusion rate into cotton compared to standard azo-based reactive dyes. Extended dyeing time — 90 to 120 minutes after alkali addition — and carefully staged salt and alkali dosing are essential to achieve level turquoise across the fabric. Levelness correction after the process is complete is substantially more difficult than prevention. The same copper chelate structure is inherently UV-stable, which is why this dye class consistently delivers light fastness 5–6 — significantly better than most azo reactive blues.

Solubility & Dissolution Guidelines

REACTOBOND TURQUOISE BLUE G is notably less soluble than standard azo-based reactive dyes — approximately 20–30 g/L at room temperature, rising to 40–50 g/L at 50°C. The large copper phthalocyanine molecular structure is the reason for this; it diffuses and dissolves more slowly than small-molecule reactive dyes. Undissolved particles added directly to the bath produce spots that are particularly difficult to correct in turquoise shades — prevention during dissolution is the only practical approach.

Start with a cold-water paste, then bring up to 50°C with continuous stirring for a minimum of 10 minutes. Screen through a 100-mesh filter before adding to the bath. Never dissolve in alkaline solution — the dye should be loaded into the bath in neutral form; alkali is added separately after the substrate has loaded with dye. Use the dissolved solution within 4 hours for consistent fixation yield.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • Use water at 50°C — solubility is low at room temperature
  • Paste the powder in cold water first before adding warm water
  • Stir continuously for 10+ minutes — phthalocyanine dyes dissolve slowly
  • Filter through 100-mesh before adding to bath — critical for spot prevention
  • Never pre-dissolve in alkaline solution
  • Use dissolved solution within 4 hours for best fixation results

Exhaust Dyeing — Dosage Guide by Shade Depth

All values are for cotton exhaust dyeing at liquor ratio 1:10–1:15. Add NaCl in 3 stages before alkali addition. Extended dyeing time (90–120 min after alkali addition) is essential — do not cut this short.

Process Notes

  • Salt staging: Add NaCl in 3 portions over the first 30–40 minutes — critical for level exhaustion with this dye class.
  • Alkali staging: Add Na₂CO₃ in 3–4 small portions over 15–20 minutes; a single-shot addition causes uneven fixation and shade variation.
  • Extended time: 90–120 min after alkali addition is not optional — the phthalocyanine structure diffuses slowly, and cutting this short produces a paler and less level result.
  • After-wash: Cold rinse × 2, then soap at 95°C with non-ionic detergent (2 g/L, 10–15 min) to remove unfixed hydrolysed dye — essential for achieving stated wash fastness.

Frequently Asked Questions — Reactive Blue 21

It is the only reactive dye that produces a true bright turquoise shade on cotton — a colour that cannot be achieved by blending standard blue and green reactive dyes. Its copper phthalocyanine chromophore is unique in the reactive class, delivering both the distinctive turquoise hue and inherently high light fastness (5–6).

pH 10–11 using sodium carbonate, NaCl 60–80 g/L, temperature 60–80°C, and an extended dyeing time of 90–120 minutes after alkali addition. Carefully staged salt and alkali addition is essential — add salt in two or three doses over the first 30–40 minutes before introducing alkali in small portions.

The large copper phthalocyanine molecular structure has a slower diffusion rate into cotton than standard azo-based reactive dyes. Where VS-type reactives typically complete fixation in 45–60 minutes after alkali addition, Reactive Blue 21 requires 90–120 minutes for level penetration and consistent shade depth across the fabric.

Add salt in two or three staged doses over the first 30–40 minutes to promote even dye distribution before alkali is introduced. Add sodium carbonate in small stages over 15–20 minutes rather than as a single shot. Maintain a slow, controlled temperature ramp. Unlevel turquoise is difficult to correct after the process is complete — prevention during dyeing is essential.

Rinse thoroughly in cold water first to remove bulk salt and alkali, then soap at 95°C for 10–15 minutes with a non-ionic detergent to remove unfixed hydrolysed dye. Adequate soaping is essential to develop the stated wash fastness of 4–5.

Light fastness 5–6 on the ISO Blue Wool scale — among the highest in the reactive dye class. The inherent UV-stability of the copper phthalocyanine chromophore is why this grade consistently outperforms most azo-based reactive blues for outdoor textiles, home furnishings, and other long-service-life applications.

Yes — for teal, sea-green, and aqua shade recipes, it is combined with VS-type reactive yellows or greens. Note that RB21's extended dyeing time and higher NaCl concentration (60–80 g/L) must be compatible with the partner dye's migration behaviour. Always confirm levelness compatibility on a lab scale before committing to production.

Yes, but levelness control in garment and rope dyeing with RB21 requires careful management of liquor ratio, salt and alkali staging, and dyeing time. Run compatibility and levelness trials before committing to production, particularly for garment-dyed turquoise where shade uniformity across pieces is critical.
