Reactive Red 198 — Product Overview

Reactive Red 198 is a bright, wash-fast red reactive dye that is one of the most widely used reds in cotton dyeing. Its clean, high-strength red shade and excellent wash fastness make it a key component in trichromatic reactive dyeing systems for fashion and textile applications. Supplied by Yobai Industries as REACTOBOND RED RB.

The bifunctional chemistry of REACTOBOND RED RB — carrying two reactive groups capable of forming covalent bonds with cellulose — is the primary reason for its higher fixation efficiency and its position as the standard red in trichromatic reactive systems. A greater proportion of the applied dye forms the fibre-dye covalent bond rather than hydrolysing in the alkali bath, reducing effluent colour load and improving batch-to-batch reproducibility. It dyes at 60°C with standard NaCl and Na₂CO₃ auxiliaries, aligning with the exhaust conditions of compatible reactive yellows and blues in trichromatic recipes. Hot soaping at 95°C after fixation remains essential to remove residual hydrolysed dye and achieve the stated wash fastness.

Solubility & Dissolution Guidelines

REACTOBOND RED RB dissolves well in warm water — approximately 50–80 g/L at 40–50°C. Dissolving at 40–50°C is preferred, particularly for the medium and deep shades where higher dye concentrations are used. As a bifunctional reactive dye, it carries two reactive groups, and both must remain intact until fixation on the fibre — this means pre-dissolving in alkaline solution is particularly problematic for this grade and must be avoided.

Paste the powder in cold water, bring to 40–50°C with continuous stirring, and filter through a 100-mesh screen before adding to the bath. Add the dissolved dye stock to a neutral bath with the substrate present, introduce salt in staged doses, then add alkali in portions after salt exhaustion is underway. This sequence ensures the full bifunctional advantage — both reactive groups are available to bond at the point of fixation.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • Use water at 40–50°C for optimum dissolution
  • Paste the powder in cold water first before adding warm water
  • Stir continuously until fully dissolved before addition to bath
  • Filter through 100-mesh before adding to bath
  • Never pre-dissolve in alkaline solution — bifunctional reactivity makes this particularly risky
  • Use dissolved solution within 4 hours

Exhaust Dyeing — Dosage Guide by Shade Depth

All values are for cotton exhaust dyeing at liquor ratio 1:10. Add NaCl in 2–3 stages before alkali addition. The bifunctional design gives higher fixation yield at all shade depths compared to monofunctional VS reds.

Process Notes

  • Salt staging: Add NaCl in 2–3 portions over 20–30 minutes before alkali addition for level exhaustion.
  • Alkali staging: Add Na₂CO₃ in 2 portions after salt exhaustion to control the rate of both reactive group fixation events.
  • Trichromatic compatibility: Reactive Red 198 at 60°C exhaust aligns with reactive yellows (e.g. RY17) and reactive blues (e.g. RB5, RB89) for complete trichromatic recipes. Confirm migration compatibility on a lab scale first.
  • After-wash: Cold rinse × 2, soap at 95°C (2 g/L non-ionic, 15 min) to remove unfixed hydrolysate — essential for wet rubbing fastness at all shade depths.

Frequently Asked Questions — Reactive Red 198

Reactive Red 198 (REACTOBOND RED RB) is a bifunctional reactive dye carrying two reactive groups capable of forming covalent bonds with cellulose. This gives it higher fixation efficiency than monofunctional reactive reds, less unfixed dye in the effluent, and reliable batch-to-batch shade reproducibility. Its 60°C exhaust conditions align with compatible reactive yellows and blues, making it the default red in trichromatic cotton dyeing.

pH 10–11 (sodium carbonate), NaCl 60–80 g/L, temperature 60°C, standard exhaust process (jigger, winch, jet, or garment machine). Add salt first in stages, then introduce Na₂CO₃ in portions to prevent sudden uneven strike.

Under optimum exhaust conditions, REACTOBOND RED RB achieves fixation rates of 75–85%, higher than typical monofunctional VS-type reactive reds at 60–70%. The second reactive group gives the dye a second opportunity to bond to cellulose if the first group hydrolyses, reducing the proportion of unfixed dye in the bath and improving effluent quality and wash-off simplicity.

As the standard red component alongside a yellow (Reactive Yellow 17) and a blue (Reactive Blue 89 or Reactive Blue 21). All three dye at 60°C with NaCl and Na₂CO₃, making bath management in a single exhaust process straightforward. They cover the full orange-through-dark-earth shade gamut on cotton.

Even with bifunctional fixation, 15–25% of applied dye remains unfixed (hydrolysed). This must be removed by soaping at 95°C for 10–15 minutes with a non-ionic surfactant to achieve the stated wash fastness of 4–5. Inadequate soaping results in bleeding onto adjacent fabric during washing and poor wet rubbing fastness — even when initial shade depth looks correct.

Yes. REACTOBOND RED RB is widely used in garment dyeing machines for cotton knitwear and woven garments. The 60°C process temperature and standard NaCl/Na₂CO₃ protocol are compatible with most garment dyeing machine setups. Staged alkali addition improves levelness in garment machines.

Yes. At 4–6% o.w.f., REACTOBOND RED RB produces deep red shades. Combined with Reactive Blue 89, crimson-through-maroon-through-wine shades are achievable on cotton. Staged alkali addition and adequate fixation time are essential at heavy depths to prevent surface ring dyeing.

RR198 (bifunctional, 60°C) is preferred in trichromatic systems for its matching exhaust conditions with compatible yellow and blue grades. RR120 (HE monofunctional, 60–80°C) is suited for jigger applications requiring higher exhaust temperature and is used where maximum shade depth is the priority. RR120's soaping criticality is higher than RR198.
