Reactive Red 2 — Product Overview

Reactive Red 2 is a DCT (cold brand) reactive dye that produces red shades on cotton at room temperature, making it suitable for cold pad-batch and continuous dyeing processes. It is widely used in energy-efficient dyeing operations. Supplied by Yobai Industries as REACTOBOND RED M5B.

In cold pad-batch operations, REACTOBOND RED M5B is padded with sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate through the fabric, the rolls are sealed in polythene film and rotated slowly at room temperature for 8–16 hours while the dye-cellulose reaction proceeds. The working dye-alkali solution has a limited pot life and should be prepared fresh — typically at the start of each shift. No salt is required. Cold-water rinsing followed by hot soaping at 95°C removes unfixed hydrolysed dye and develops final wash fastness equivalent to hot-exhaust reactive grades. Uniform padding nip pressure and consistent roll take-up tension are the principal process variables controlling shade reproducibility in pad-batch.

Solubility & Dissolution Guidelines

REACTOBOND RED M5B dissolves readily in cold or lukewarm water — approximately 40–60 g/L at room temperature — which suits cold pad-batch where the process runs entirely at ambient temperature. Complete dissolution before the dye is added to the pad trough is important; undissolved particles at the nip cause spots that are particularly visible in red shades on pale or printed grounds.

Dissolve the dye in plain, slightly warm water first, then prepare the alkali (NaOH + sodium silicate) separately. Combine in the pad trough at the required ratio immediately before use — do not pre-mix and store. Once the dye and alkali are combined, the working solution should be used within 4–8 hours. The DCT reactive group starts hydrolysing in alkaline conditions over time, and aged solution produces pale, unlevel shade with poor wash fastness regardless of batch time.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • Dissolve in cold or slightly warm water only
  • Prepare alkali (NaOH + silicate) solution separately
  • Combine dye + alkali in pad trough immediately before padding
  • Use combined working solution within 4–8 hours
  • Never heat alkaline working solution
  • Prepare fresh solution at the start of each shift

Cold Pad-Batch — Dosage Guide by Shade Depth

All values are for cold pad-batch on cotton. Wet pick-up: 70–80%. Batch at 20–25°C in sealed polythene film with slow roll rotation throughout the batching period.

Process Notes

  • Wet pick-up: Maintain consistent nip pressure for 70–80% wet pick-up — uneven nip is the primary cause of width-direction shade variation in pad-batch.
  • Batching temperature: Below 15°C ambient, extend batch time by 4–8 hours; DCT reaction rate is temperature-dependent.
  • Roll sealing: Polythene wrapping must be airtight — CO₂ from the air gradually neutralises the alkali and reduces fixation at the outer surface of the roll.
  • After-treatment: Cold rinse × 2, soap at 95°C (2 g/L non-ionic detergent, 10–15 min), warm rinse, cold rinse — essential for wash fastness.

Frequently Asked Questions — Reactive Red 2

Reactive Red 2 (REACTOBOND RED M5B) is a DCT cold brand reactive dye for cold pad-batch and continuous dyeing of cotton and cellulosic fibres. It forms a covalent bond with cellulose at room temperature (20–25°C) under highly alkaline conditions (pH 10–12) — no steam or elevated dyebath temperature is required.

Pad liquor: dye + NaOH 20–25 g/L + sodium silicate 100 g/L; no salt required. Wet pick-up: 70–80%. Batch: seal in polythene film, rotate slowly at room temperature for 8–16 hours. Rinse cold, then soap at 95°C for 10 minutes. No steam equipment required.

8–12 hours in warm ambient conditions (25°C+). In cold weather (below 15°C), the reaction rate slows and 16–24 hours may be needed. Validate your batching schedule against your facility's actual temperature range each season.

4–8 hours. The DCT reactive group begins hydrolysing in the alkaline solution over time. Prepare fresh solutions at the start of each shift — do not carry over unused solution to the next shift, as hydrolysed dye cannot fix to the fibre.

No. Reactive Red 2 is a cold brand (DCT) dye optimised for cold pad-batch and continuous processes. In a hot exhaust bath at 60°C, premature hydrolysis before fixation would result in poor yield and inadequate wash fastness. For hot exhaust dyeing, use a VS-type (Reactive Red 198) or HE-type (Reactive Red 120) reactive red instead.

Steam heating of the dyebath is eliminated entirely, which is the largest thermal energy consumer in conventional reactive exhaust dyeing. For large-volume cotton production, cold pad-batch can reduce dye-house thermal energy consumption by 40–60% per kilogram dyed compared to hot exhaust processes. No salt is also required, further reducing material costs and effluent load.

A medium red shade on cotton and viscose. Shade depth ranges from pale rose at 0.2–0.5% o.w.f. to full medium red at 2–3% o.w.f. At higher concentrations, it shifts towards a deeper scarlet-red tone.

Yes. It is compatible with other DCT cold brand reactive dyes for trichromatic or bi-chromatic combinations in cold pad-batch. All partner dyes must have compatible batching time and pot life. Validate the combination on a lab scale before production.

MOQ is 10 kg. Samples of 1–5 kg dispatched within 24 hours. Contact technical@yobaiindustries.in for pricing, TDS, or COA.

Storage & Handling

Store in a cool, dry location below 25°C. Reactive dyes are sensitive to moisture and elevated temperatures — keep containers sealed at all times. Avoid storage near acidic materials. Protect from direct sunlight.

Handling Precautions

  • Wear appropriate PPE — gloves and dust mask during handling
  • Avoid inhalation of fine powder
  • Reseal containers immediately after use
