Reactive Blue 4 — Product Overview

Reactive Blue 4 is a DCT (dichlorotriazine) cold brand reactive dye that reacts with cotton at room temperature, making it ideal for cold pad-batch processes. It offers significant energy savings over conventional exhaust dyeing while still delivering good wash fastness through covalent fibre bonding. Supplied by Yobai Industries as REACTOBOND BLUE MR.

In cold pad-batch dyeing, fabric is padded through a dye-alkali liquor (NaOH 15–20 g/L plus sodium silicate 100 g/L), sealed in polythene film, and batched at room temperature for 8–24 hours to allow the dye-cellulose covalent bond to form. The DCT chemistry of REACTOBOND BLUE MR is highly reactive under alkaline conditions at room temperature, so the working solution has a limited pot life — typically 4–8 hours — and should be prepared fresh each shift. No salt is required in cold pad-batch since migration control is achieved by the pad nip and the sealed batching film rather than by dye-bath electrolytes. Energy consumption is substantially lower than hot exhaust dyeing, which is the principal reason mills use pad-batch for large-volume cellulosic dyeing.

Solubility & Dissolution Guidelines

REACTOBOND BLUE MR dissolves readily in cold water — approximately 40–60 g/L at room temperature — which is an advantage in cold pad-batch where the process is run entirely at ambient temperature. The anthraquinone structure dissolves cleanly without the pre-pasting step that some reactive dyes require, though thorough stirring before adding to the pad trough is still important to ensure uniform distribution in the liquor.

Important: the dye should be dissolved in plain water first, then the alkali (NaOH and sodium silicate) should be added separately to the pad trough. Never add NaOH directly to the dry dye powder — the heat of dilution can cause localised pre-reaction. The combined pad liquor should be used within 4–8 hours; the DCT reactive group begins hydrolysing in alkaline solution over time, reducing fixation yield if the solution ages.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • Dissolve dye in cold or lukewarm water only
  • Add alkali (NaOH + silicate) separately to the pad trough — not to the dye stock
  • Stir thoroughly before pad liquor enters the trough
  • Use within 4–8 hours — do not carry over alkaline solution
  • Monitor pad trough temperature — avoid elevated ambient temperatures
  • Prepare fresh working solution at the start of each shift

Cold Pad-Batch — Dosage Guide by Shade Depth

All values are for cold pad-batch on cotton. Wet pick-up: 70–80%. Batch at 20–25°C in sealed polythene film. Rotate rolls slowly throughout the batching period.

Shade Depth Dye (g/L) NaOH (g/L) Na₂SiO₃ (g/L) Temp (°C) Batch Time (h)
Light Blue10–201580–10020–258–12
Medium Blue30–5015–1810020–2510–14
Dark Blue60–8018–20100–12020–2512–16
Deep / Very Dark80–1002012020–2514–20

Process Notes

  • Wet pick-up: Control nip pressure to achieve 70–80% wet pick-up; inconsistent nip pressure is the leading cause of uneven shade across roll width.
  • Batching temperature: In ambient temperatures below 15°C, extend batch time by 4–6 hours; reaction rate slows significantly in cold conditions.
  • Seal quality: Polythene wrapping must be airtight — exposure to air causes CO₂ to neutralise the alkali and reduce fixation at the roll surface.
  • After-treatment: Cold rinse × 2, then soap at 95°C with non-ionic detergent (2 g/L, 10–15 min), then warm and cold rinse — essential for wash fastness.

Frequently Asked Questions — Reactive Blue 4

REACTOBOND BLUE MR (Reactive Blue 4) is a DCT (dichlorotriazine) cold brand reactive dye for cold pad-batch and continuous dyeing of cotton and cellulosic fibres. It reacts with cellulose at room temperature (20–25°C) under highly alkaline conditions, forming a covalent bond without the use of steam or elevated dyebath temperatures.

Pad liquor: dye + NaOH 15–20 g/L + sodium silicate 100 g/L; no salt required. Wet pick-up: 70–80%. Batch: seal rolls in polythene film, rotate slowly at room temperature (20–25°C) for 8–24 hours. Rinse in cold water, then soap at 95°C for 10 minutes with a non-ionic detergent.

8–12 hours is typical in warm ambient conditions (25°C+). In cold winter conditions (below 15°C) the dye-cellulose reaction rate slows and 16–24 hours may be required. Batch time should be validated for your facility conditions each season.

Typically 4–8 hours. The DCT reactive group begins to hydrolyse in the alkaline solution over time, converting to unfixed dye that washes off rather than bonding to the fibre. Prepare fresh solutions at the start of each shift — do not carry over unused solution.

No. Reactive Blue 4 is a cold brand (DCT) dye optimised for cold pad-batch and continuous processes. Applying it in a hot exhaust bath at 60°C would cause premature hydrolysis before fixation, resulting in poor yield and inadequate wash fastness. For hot exhaust processes, use a VS-type or HE-type reactive blue.

Steam heating of the dyebath is eliminated entirely, which is the largest thermal energy consumer in conventional reactive exhaust dyeing. For large-volume cotton dyeing operations, cold pad-batch can reduce dye-house thermal energy consumption by 40–60% per kilogram of fabric processed compared to hot exhaust processes.

A clear, bright blue on cotton and viscose — slightly greener in tone than a standard navy, suitable for sky-blue through to medium blue shade ranges at normal application concentrations. It is distinct from turquoise (Reactive Blue 21) and does not substitute for navy (Reactive Blue 89).

Yes. It is compatible with other DCT cold brand reactive dyes for trichromatic or bi-chromatic combinations in cold pad-batch. Ensure all partner dyes in the combination have compatible batching time requirements and pot life. Validate the combination on a lab scale before production.

MOQ is 10 kg. Samples of 1–5 kg dispatched within 24 hours. Contact technical@yobaiindustries.in for pricing, TDS, or COA.
