Reactive Orange 16 — Product Overview

Reactive Orange 16 is a bright, vivid orange reactive dye for cotton and cellulosic fibre dyeing. It delivers high tinctorial strength and good wash fastness through covalent bonding with cellulose. Supplied by Yobai Industries as REACTOBOND ORANGE 3R with consistent batch testing.

REACTOBOND ORANGE 3R produces a clean, vivid orange with no brown or red drift, making it the standard choice for brightness-critical applications — sportswear fabrics, high-visibility yardage, and the orange component in trichromatic reactive shade recipes. In trichromatic combinations, it pairs with a yellow (such as Reactive Yellow 17) and a red (such as Reactive Red 198) to cover the full orange-through-rust gamut on cotton. Hot soaping at 95°C after fixation is mandatory — unfixed hydrolysed dye not removed by thorough soaping will result in poor wet rubbing fastness even when initial shade depth appears correct.

Solubility & Dissolution Guidelines

REACTOBOND ORANGE 3R dissolves well in warm water — approximately 50–80 g/L at 40–50°C. Dissolving at 40–50°C is recommended over room temperature dissolution, particularly at higher concentrations used for deep orange shades. Pre-pasting the powder in a small quantity of cold water before adding warm water prevents clumping and ensures a uniform, fully dissolved stock solution before addition to the bath.

Filter the dissolved dye through a 100-mesh screen before adding to the dyebath. Do not dissolve in alkaline water — add the dye stock to the neutral bath first, and introduce alkali only after the substrate has had adequate time to absorb the dye with salt assistance. This sequence ensures that the reactive vinyl sulphone group does not hydrolyse prematurely before fixation.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • Use water at 40–50°C for optimum dissolution rate
  • Paste the powder in cold water first before adding warm water
  • Stir continuously — ensure complete dissolution before bath addition
  • Filter through 100-mesh before adding to bath
  • Never pre-dissolve in alkaline solution
  • Use dissolved solution within 4 hours for best fixation results

Exhaust Dyeing — Dosage Guide by Shade Depth

All values are for cotton exhaust dyeing at liquor ratio 1:10. Add NaCl in 2–3 stages before alkali addition to ensure even exhaustion across the shade range.

Process Notes

  • Salt staging: Add NaCl in 2–3 portions over the first 20–30 minutes to ensure level exhaustion before alkali addition.
  • Alkali staging: Add Na₂CO₃ in 2 portions after salt exhaustion is complete to control the fixation rate and avoid unlevel shade.
  • Trichromatic use: When using as the orange component in a three-colour recipe, confirm compatibility with partner dyes for migration behaviour and exhaustion rate at the same process temperature.
  • After-wash: Rinse cold, then soap at 95°C (2 g/L non-ionic, 15 min) to remove unfixed hydrolysed dye — essential for wet rubbing fastness at orange depths.

Frequently Asked Questions — Reactive Orange 16

Reactive Orange 16 (REACTOBOND ORANGE 3R) is a VS-class reactive dye that produces a clean, vivid orange shade on cotton and viscose with no brown or red drift. Its high tinctorial strength makes it suitable for both pale and full-depth orange applications, and it is the standard orange component in trichromatic reactive dyeing systems.

pH 10–11 (sodium carbonate), NaCl 40–60 g/L, temperature 60°C, liquor ratio 1:10, standard exhaust process. Add salt first in stages to promote exhaustion, then introduce alkali in portions to avoid sudden and uneven strike.

In trichromatic systems, REACTOBOND ORANGE 3R is paired with a yellow (such as Reactive Yellow 17) and a red (such as Reactive Red 198) to develop the orange-through-rust shade gamut on cotton. All three dye at 60°C with standard NaCl and Na₂CO₃, making bath management straightforward. Run small-scale compatibility and migration tests before committing to production.

Unfixed hydrolysed reactive dye not removed by thorough soaping at 95°C will stain adjacent fabric under wet rubbing and washing conditions. For vivid orange shades, even a small residual amount of hydrolysate causes visible fastness failures. A minimum of 10–15 minutes at 95°C with a non-ionic surfactant is non-negotiable.

Yes. REACTOBOND ORANGE 3R is widely used in garment dyeing machines for cotton knitwear, T-shirts, and woven garments. The 60°C process temperature and standard NaCl/Na₂CO₃ auxiliaries are compatible with most garment dyeing machine protocols. Staged salt and alkali addition is important for level results in garment machines.

For full-depth orange (3%+ o.w.f.), thorough pre-scouring and bleaching of the substrate are essential to ensure even dye penetration. Staged salt and alkali addition helps avoid surface strike. For very heavy fabric constructions, a temperature-profiled or long-bath process is advisable.

Yes. It dyes viscose and modal under the same alkaline exhaust conditions as cotton, typically achieving slightly deeper shade at the same concentration due to higher fibre amorphous content. Careful pH and temperature control is important for viscose, which is more sensitive to alkaline conditions at elevated temperature.

From pale peach (0.1–0.5% o.w.f.) through vivid orange (1–2%) to deep burnt orange and terracotta (3–5%). In combination with Reactive Red 198, brick-red and rust shades are achievable on cotton across the trichromatic orange gamut.

MOQ is 10 kg. Samples of 1–5 kg dispatched within 24 hours. Contact technical@yobaiindustries.in for pricing, TDS, or COA.

Storage & Handling

Store in a cool, dry location below 25°C. Reactive dyes are sensitive to moisture and elevated temperatures — keep containers sealed at all times. Avoid storage near acidic materials. Protect from direct sunlight.
