Solvent Blue 48 — Product Overview

Solvent Blue 48 is a bright, transparent blue solvent dye — the transparency being the defining property that drives most of its industrial use. In plastics mass colouring, it colours polycarbonate, PMMA, PET, and polystyrene with a clean, jewel-like blue that remains brilliant even at significant wall thickness, unlike pigments that scatter light and turn shades opaque. Optical component manufacturers and drink-packaging converters specify transparent solvent blues precisely because they need colour without opacity loss. The shade character is a vivid royal blue — no green bias, no violet cast at standard working concentrations.

In printing ink systems, YOBISOL BLUE RGLN dissolves readily in aromatic solvents and esters — toluene, ethyl acetate, propylene glycol monomethyl ether — making it compatible with the full range of flexographic and gravure solvent ink formulations. Colour strength is high enough that low loading levels give full shade development, which matters for ink cost at production volumes. In wax and candle applications, the dye dissolves cleanly in the paraffin melt without agglomeration and distributes evenly through the wax mass, producing consistent colour through the full candle cross-section. It blends predictably with other YOBISOL grades for tonal adjustment. Supplied by Yobai Industries as YOBISOL BLUE RGLN with batch-level colour strength and solubility verification before dispatch.

Solubility in Organic Solvents

Solvent Blue 48 dissolves well in aromatic hydrocarbons and esters, making toluene and ethyl acetate the most practical solvents for preparing concentrated master batches. For ink systems, it can be dissolved directly in the ink solvent — toluene, propylene glycol monomethyl ether, or IPA — at ambient temperature with moderate stirring. Alcohol-based dissolution works well if the final formulation is also alcohol-based.

For plastics mass colouring, the dye is typically pre-blended into a carrier resin or wax concentrate at 2–5% strength, then let-down into the polymer during extrusion or injection moulding. Do not add powder directly to the polymer melt — uneven dispersion leads to colour streaks. For wax and candle applications, add to the paraffin melt at 60–80°C with continuous stirring until fully dissolved, then cool slowly to maintain even colour distribution. Always verify dissolution is complete before use — undissolved particles show as dark specks in thin-walled transparent parts.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • Best solvent: toluene or xylene for rapid, complete dissolution
  • For plastics, pre-blend into carrier pellet or wax masterbatch
  • For inks, dissolve directly in ink solvent system at ambient temp
  • For wax, add to melt at 60–80°C and stir to full clarity
  • Verify complete dissolution before adding to final product
  • Never add to water — completely insoluble

Frequently Asked Questions — Solvent Blue 48

YOBISOL BLUE RGLN is our trade name for Solvent Blue 48 — an anthraquinone-based solvent dye. It produces transparent, bright blue shades in organic solvent-based applications. Primary uses include colouring plastics (PC, PMMA, PS, ABS, PET), printing inks, wax and candles, and wood stains. Its anthraquinone structure delivers the transparency and colour brilliance that standard azo dyes cannot match at equivalent concentration in mass-tone applications.

Anthraquinone dyes like Solvent Blue 48 produce inherently more transparent and brilliant shades than azo dyes at equivalent concentration. The anthraquinone chromophore absorbs light in a narrower, more selective band, which translates to vivid hues with high clarity — particularly desirable in clear-cast acrylic sheets, tinted polycarbonate panels, and high-gloss printing inks. Azo dyes are generally more economical but can appear duller or less transparent in direct comparison at similar loading levels.

Solvent Blue 48 dissolves well in aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene), esters (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate), alcohols (IPA, ethanol), and ketones (MEK). Solubility in aliphatic hydrocarbons (mineral spirits) is limited. For printing ink and coating applications, toluene or ethyl acetate are the preferred carriers. The dye is completely insoluble in water.

YOBISOL BLUE RGLN is compatible with polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA / acrylic), polystyrene (PS), ABS, and PET. Its heat stability up to 180°C covers the processing window for these resins. It is introduced as a masterbatch or let-down concentrate into the polymer melt. Always run compatibility and migration trials at your specific processing temperature and resin grade before committing to bulk production.

In flexographic and gravure printing inks, YOBISOL BLUE RGLN is used at 0.5–4% by weight of the ink formulation, dissolved in toluene, IPA, or ethyl acetate. It gives a clean, transparent blue with excellent substrate wetting on polyester film, aluminium foil, and paper. The dye's relatively low molecular weight (~380 g/mol) contributes to good compatibility with resin binders and rapid solvent release on press.

Yes. Solvent Blue 48 is well suited for wax and candle colouring. Add the dye to the wax melt at 60–80°C and stir until fully dissolved before pouring. Typical addition levels are 0.05–0.3% by weight of wax depending on the depth of shade required. It gives a clear, bright blue with no cloudiness or bleed once the wax solidifies. Paraffin, soy, and palm wax systems are all compatible.

Solvent Blue 48 has a light fastness rating of 4–5 on the ISO 105-B02 Blue Wool scale — adequate for indoor applications but not recommended for prolonged direct outdoor exposure. It is well suited for interior plastics, display packaging, candles, and stationery items where UV load is limited. For exterior or long-service-life end uses, specify a dye with a rating of 6–7 or supplement the formulation with UV stabilisers.

Yes. YOBISOL BLUE RGLN blends well within the YOBISOL range provided all grades share a compatible carrier solvent. Combining it with YOBISOL BLACK RE (Solvent Black 27) produces grey-blues, slate tones, and dark navies. Adding a yellow-series YOBISOL grade shifts the hue toward teal or blue-green. Anthraquinone and azo dyes generally co-dissolve cleanly in aromatic and ester carriers — conduct small-scale trials in your system before scaling up.
