Solvent Red 127 — Product Overview

Solvent Red 127 is a bright bluish-pink to red solvent dye popular in wax and candle colouring, plastics tinting, and specialty ink formulations. Its good solubility in alcohols and esters makes it easy to incorporate into a wide range of solvent-based systems. Supplied by Yobai Industries as YOBISOL PINK 5BLG.

In candle and wax colouring, YOBISOL PINK 5BLG dissolves cleanly in the paraffin or soy wax melt and distributes evenly through the cast. The bluish-pink character — positioned between a true red and a cool cosmetic pink — is distinctive in opaque and semi-transparent wax where flat, uncomplicated colour is preferred. In plastics and cosmetic packaging, it gives transparent rose tints at low loading and deep pink at higher concentration in polystyrene and acrylic. Its compatibility with alcohols and esters suits flexographic and gravure inks for beauty and personal-care product packaging. Verify final shade in your specific substrate and resin system before committing to a production run.

Solubility in Organic Solvents

Solvent Red 127 dissolves most readily in polar solvents — alcohols and esters give the fastest and cleanest dissolution. Unlike mineral oil-based solvent dyes, its performance in straight aliphatic petroleum products is limited. For wax and candle applications, pre-dissolving in a small quantity of ethanol or fragrance oil before adding to the paraffin melt is the recommended approach for even, streak-free incorporation.

For transparent plastic colouring, pre-dissolve in a concentrated masterbatch carrier at 0.5–2% strength before let-down. This gives uniform colour distribution in the moulded part. For gravure and flexo inks, good compatibility with ester-based and aromatic carrier systems. The bluish-pink shade develops cleanly in transparent resin without the green shift seen in some yellow-pink types.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • For wax, pre-dissolve in ethanol or fragrance oil; add solution to melt at 70–80°C with stirring
  • In plastics, use a concentrated masterbatch carrier rather than neat powder addition
  • For inks, dissolve in ester or aromatic carrier; filter before mill addition
  • Not suitable for straight mineral oil or aliphatic petroleum applications
  • Verify migration resistance in PVC or PS substrate before committing to production
  • Do not add water to formulations containing SR127 — insoluble; will cause phase separation

Frequently Asked Questions — Solvent Red 127

Solvent Red 127 is an azo solvent dye with a bluish-pink to light red shade. The "5BLG" designation indicates the blue shift in the hue — it reads as a cool, cosmetic pink rather than a warm red-pink. This makes it well-suited for candle, wax, and cosmetic packaging applications where a clean, uncomplicated pink colour is preferred over the warmer tones of YOBISOL FIRE RED G (Solvent Red 119).

Alcohols (ethanol, IPA), esters (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate), and aromatic solvents (toluene, xylene). Good solubility in these systems makes it straightforward to incorporate into flexo and gravure inks, lacquers, and wax systems. Not the best choice for mineral oil or aliphatic petroleum systems — for oil-based applications, Solvent Red 119 or 160 are more suitable.

Add to molten paraffin or soy wax at 70–80°C. Pre-dissolve in fragrance oil or a small amount of ethanol for faster incorporation. Loading: 0.01–0.03% for pale blush pink; 0.05–0.1% for a clean rose; 0.1–0.2% for deep pink. The cool blue-pink character looks cleaner in white or lightly tinted wax than warmer red dyes. Even distribution through the cast at these concentrations.

Yes. Widely used for transparent and semi-transparent cosmetic packaging in polystyrene and acrylic (PMMA). The bluish-pink shade is appropriate for skincare, personal care, and beauty product packaging where clean, feminine colour is expected. Heat stable to 180°C — suitable for standard injection moulding temperatures for PS and acrylic substrates.

Mix into the polymer melt or via masterbatch at 0.05–0.3% loading depending on target shade depth. Compatible with polystyrene, acrylic (PMMA), and PVC. The cool pink develops well in transparent resin systems. For opaque compounds with white pigment, higher loading is needed to achieve visible colour. Verify migration resistance in your specific substrate — test before full production.

In transparent paraffin wax: 0.01% for pale blush, 0.15–0.2% for vivid deep pink. In transparent PS plastic: 0.05% for rose tint, 0.2–0.3% for strong pink. In solvent-based ink (100 g/L): 0.5–1% for light pink, 3–5% for deep red. Actual depth depends on substrate transparency, film thickness, and resin system.

Yes. Good solubility in esters and alcohols makes it compatible with most solvent-based flexo and gravure binder systems — nitrocellulose, polyamide, and vinyl resins. Typical loading 1–4%. Used in cosmetic packaging, feminine hygiene, and personal-care product label inks where a cool pink to light red is specified.

SR127 (YOBISOL PINK 5BLG): cool bluish-pink — cosmetic, clean, no orange. SR119 (YOBISOL FIRE RED G): warm orange-red — rich, warm, cherry. Choose SR127 when you need a feminine pink or cool rose in wax, packaging, or inks. Choose SR119 when you need a vivid, warm red or cherry shade in wood stains, leather, or fuel applications.

Solvent Red 127 can be used for mass colouring (dope dyeing) of polypropylene fibres and some other synthetic fibre systems through melt spinning. The pink to bluish-red shade is useful in blended-fibre and decorative applications. Verify heat stability at your specific extrusion or spinning temperature, and test for migration in the final fibre application.
