At these temperatures there is no measurable shade shift or decomposition under standard processing dwell times. If your barrel temperature or dwell time is at the upper end, always run a small-scale trial first before committing to a full production batch.

The bluish-red character comes from the anthraquinone chromophore. Anthraquinone-based reds absorb in a wavelength range that shifts the perceived hue toward the blue side of red, which is why they look distinctly different from azo reds, which tend toward orange-red. This bluish character is useful when you want a cooler, more saturated red — in packaging design, for instance, where brand colours often specify a particular red hue that cannot have orange pull.

It dissolves well in esters (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate), ketones (MEK, acetone, cyclohexanone), and aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene). Solubility in aliphatic hydrocarbons (mineral spirits, hexane) is limited. If you are working in a predominantly aliphatic system, use a polar co-solvent to carry the dye into solution first, then blend into the aliphatic base. In gravure and flexographic inks using ester or ketone solvents, 0.5–3% by weight is the typical working range. The exact concentration depends on the substrate opacity, ink film thickness, and desired colour strength. SR122 has high tinctorial strength — start at the lower end and adjust upward. Pre-dissolve in warm solvent (40–60°C) and filter before adding to the ink vehicle for best results. For overprint varnish tinting where just a hint of red is wanted, 0.1–0.3% is usually sufficient.

Migration in plastics refers to dye molecules moving from the coloured plastic to adjacent surfaces — another layer of plastic, a label, or a contact material. A dye with poor migration resistance bleeds, stains, and causes compliance problems. SR122 has good migration resistance in hard thermoplastics like PC, ABS, and PMMA. In softer matrices like flexible PVC or polyolefins, migration resistance is lower, and it would need to be tested at your specific formulation.
