Trade Name: YOBISOL RED B · CI Number: Solvent Red 122
Solvent Red 122 is an anthraquinone-based bluish-red dye that earns its place in formulation labs through a combination of heat resistance and colour depth. The anthraquinone chromophore gives it that clean, cool-red character — no orange pull, no muddiness in the final article. In polycarbonate, ABS, and acrylic it holds colour through processing temperatures up to 200°C without shade shift or degradation residue in the machine barrel. That last point matters more than it is often acknowledged — a dye that degrades at processing temperatures contaminates subsequent production runs and creates scrap you cannot recover.
In printing inks, the bluish undertone makes it particularly well-suited to packaging applications where a cooler, cleaner red is specified rather than a warm or orange-leaning alternative. Gravure and flexographic formulators use it in aromatic and ester-based ink systems where fast dissolution and non-ionic behaviour are requirements. Wax applications benefit from the transparency — candles and wax articles pick up that deep, jewel-like red that pigment-based coloured wax cannot match. Supplied by Yobai Industries as YOBISOL RED B with colour strength and solubility verified on every batch before dispatch.

Solvent Red 122 is a non-ionic dye — it does not dissolve in water and is not intended for aqueous systems. Its solubility is in organic solvents, particularly esters (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate), ketones (acetone, MEK, cyclohexanone), and aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene). This solvent profile makes it compatible with the full range of solvent-based coatings, inks, and plastics formulations.
For plastics applications the dye is typically pre-dissolved in a small quantity of compatible solvent or blended into a carrier before compounding, not added as dry powder directly to the melt. Direct powder addition often leads to uneven dispersion and visible speckling in the final part — a problem that is avoidable and that we see regularly when customers skip the pre-dispersion step.
All loadings are % by weight. Actual concentrations depend on desired shade depth, substrate, and processing conditions. Test at small scale before production runs.
| Application | Loading (%wt) | Solvent System | Processing Temp | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plastics mass colouring (injection / extrusion) | 0.01–0.3% | Pre-dispersed in carrier or solvent | 180–200°C | Pre-dissolve in ester or ketone before compounding; avoid dry powder addition |
| Gravure / flexographic printing inks | 0.5–3% | Esters, ketones (EA, BA, MEK) | Ambient | Dissolve at 40–60°C for faster incorporation; filter before use |
| Solvent-based lacquers and varnishes | 0.2–1.5% | Ketones / aromatic HC blend | Ambient | Excellent transparency; check compatibility with resin system |
| Wax and candle colouring | 0.05–0.3% | Paraffin / soy wax melt | 70–90°C | Add to melt with continuous stirring; deep red at upper end of range |
| Wood stains (solvent-based) | 0.1–1.0% | Aromatic / ester blend | Ambient | Transparent penetrating stain; combine with SY82 or SO62 for toned effects |

The shade depth achieved with Solvent Red 122 varies with loading concentration. These represent typical results in a PMMA or lacquer reference system at ambient conditions.
Actual shade depends on substrate, solvent system, and processing conditions. Request a sample for colour-critical applications.

Store below 30°C in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and ignition sources. Solvent dyes are not water-sensitive in the way reactive dyes are, but moisture ingress still causes caking and uneven dispersion in subsequent processing. Keep containers tightly sealed after every use. Keep away from strong acids, bases, and oxidising agents, which cause irreversible colour change. Do not store near open food or food-contact materials.
