Solvent Yellow 82 — Product Overview

Solvent Yellow 82 is a versatile greenish-yellow solvent dye used across wood staining, fuel colouring, plastics, and printing inks. Its good solubility in mineral spirits makes it a practical choice for oil-based stains and alkyd coatings. Supplied by Yobai Industries as YOBISOL YELLOW R with consistent colour strength testing.

In wood staining, YOBISOL YELLOW R dissolves cleanly in mineral spirits and penetrates open-grain hardwoods evenly. Used alone it produces a clean straw-to-yellow tone; blended with YOBISOL ORANGE R (Solvent Orange 99) it shifts towards golden oak, and with YOBISOL FIRE RED G (Solvent Red 119) it builds warm teak shades. In fuel colouring it is compatible with diesel and kerosene at trace concentrations (1–5 g per 1,000 litres). In plastics, it is stable to 180°C and suitable for PP and PE compounding. Light fastness of 4–5 makes it the economical choice for indoor and protected-surface applications; for outdoor or engineering-plastics end uses, YOBISOL YELLOW 2GL (Solvent Yellow 146) is the appropriate upgrade.

SY82 performs well across both aliphatic and aromatic organic solvent systems. Batch-specific TDS available on request.

Solubility in Organic Solvents

Solvent Yellow 82 has broad compatibility across both aliphatic and aromatic organic solvent systems — its good performance in mineral spirits distinguishes it from higher-performance grades such as SY146 and makes it the preferred choice for economical wood stains, alkyd-based coatings, and mineral spirit systems where 180°C heat stability and LF 4-5 are adequate. In straight mineral spirits, dissolution is faster if the solvent is warmed to 40°C.

For fuel marking, dissolve at fill point — agitation during fuel transfer provides adequate mixing at standard marking concentrations. For wax and candle applications, add the powder to molten wax at 70–80°C with continuous stirring until fully incorporated. For plastics, use a carrier masterbatch concentrate rather than direct powder addition to the polymer melt.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • For wood stains in mineral spirit base, heat to 40°C and stir for faster dissolution
  • Pre-dissolve in a small volume of toluene or ethanol for even faster incorporation
  • For wax, add to melt at 70–80°C and stir continuously until completely dissolved
  • Filter dissolved solution through 200-mesh screen before adding to coating formulations
  • For fuel marking, no pre-dissolve required at standard concentrations (1–5 g/1,000 L)
  • For PP/PE above 180°C, use SY146 (YOBISOL YELLOW 2GL) which has 200°C heat stability

Frequently Asked Questions — Solvent Yellow 82

Solvent Yellow 82 is an azo solvent dye with a greenish-yellow shade. The green shift distinguishes it from neutral or golden yellows. This characteristic is useful in wood staining where a clean, cool yellow produces a natural straw tone without the warm orange cast of golden yellows, and in fuel colouring where it reads clearly distinct from orange-marked or red-marked product grades.

Mineral spirits, white spirit, alcohols (ethanol, IPA), esters (ethyl acetate), and aromatic hydrocarbons. Good compatibility with alkyd resins and nitrocellulose coating systems. Not the best choice for polar, water-based, or purely aliphatic systems — use an appropriate dissolution solvent before addition.

Dissolve in mineral spirits at 0.5–2 g/L for a wiping stain. Penetrates hardwood and softwood grain evenly. Used alone for ash, maple, and birch (clean straw tone). Blended with Solvent Orange 99 (YOBISOL ORANGE R) for golden oak; with Solvent Red 119 (YOBISOL FIRE RED G) for teak and warm mahogany. Light fastness 4–5 — apply a clear varnish or lacquer topcoat for adequate protection in use.

Yes. SY82 has sufficient solubility in diesel and kerosene for fuel colouring at standard marking concentrations (1–5 g per 1,000 litres). The greenish-yellow shade is visually distinct from orange-marked or red-marked fuel grades under field inspection conditions. Verify compliance with any applicable national fuel colourant standard before commercial use.

Melt-blend at temperatures within the 180°C stability limit — suitable for PP, PE, and LDPE at standard compounding temperatures. Add as powder directly to compound or via masterbatch concentrate. Loading 0.05–0.3% depending on target shade depth. Gives a clean greenish-yellow in transparent resin. For engineering plastics processed above 200°C, use Solvent Yellow 146 (YOBISOL YELLOW 2GL) which has 200°C heat stability and better light fastness.

In transparent paraffin wax: 0.01–0.03% for pale cream; 0.05–0.15% for clean yellow. In mineral spirit stain: 0.3–0.8 g/L for light straw; 1.5–2.5 g/L for deep golden. In transparent PS plastic: 0.05% for pale lemon tint; 0.15–0.2% for vivid greenish-yellow. Actual depth depends on substrate transparency and resin system.

Yes. Good compatibility with both alkyd and nitrocellulose resin systems. Dissolves in the solvent portion of these coatings and remains stable through drying and curing. Used in transparent and tinted wood coatings, furniture lacquers, and coloured varnishes. Confirmed compatibility with white spirit and aromatic solvent-thinned alkyd formulations at typical concentrations.

SY82 (YOBISOL YELLOW R): greenish-yellow, heat stable to 180°C, light fastness 4–5 — economical choice for wood stains, wax, fuel, and standard-temperature plastics. SY146 (YOBISOL YELLOW 2GL): neutral bright yellow, heat stable to 200°C, light fastness 6–7 — the performance grade for engineering plastics, automotive coatings, and outdoor applications. Use SY82 where durability requirements are moderate and processing stays below 180°C.

Yes. Yobai Industries is GST registered (GST Registered) and issues GST invoices with every order.

Yes. Solvent Yellow 82 dissolves readily in mineral spirits, alcohols, and aromatic hydrocarbons used in oil-based and wax-based wood stains. Its natural greenish-yellow tone complements warm wood grain tones. It can be combined with Solvent Orange 99 or Solvent Red 119 to achieve amber and honey-brown wood finishes, or with Solvent Black 27 for dark walnut tones.
