Solubility in Organic Solvents

Solvent Yellow 146 has excellent solubility in aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and esters — the standard media for high-performance coating and engineering plastic applications. It dissolves readily at ambient temperature in toluene, xylene, MEK, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, and butyl acetate. In chlorinated solvents, solubility is also good. This strong polar and aromatic affinity makes it naturally compatible with the resin systems it is intended for: polyurethane, epoxy, acrylic, and alkyd stoving lacquers.

For mineral spirit-based wood stain systems, solubility is limited — pre-dissolve in a small volume of butyl acetate or MEK before adding to the mineral spirit formulation. In wax applications, dissolve in a compatible ester at ambient before adding to the molten wax at 70–80°C; this gives cleaner, faster distribution than adding dry powder directly to the melt.

Aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene), esters (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate), ketones (MEK, cyclohexanone), and chlorinated solvents. Excellent compatibility with polyurethane, epoxy, acrylic, and alkyd stoving coating resins. For wax or mineral spirit applications, check solubility in your specific system — SY82 tends to perform better in straight mineral spirit and paraffin wax systems.

200°C heat stability covers processing temperatures for ABS, polycarbonate blends, PA6/PA66 compounding, and PET at standard dwell times. At these temperatures, lower-grade yellow dyes (including SY82) fade or shift shade. SY146 maintains full colour intensity through the melt. Typical loading: 0.05–0.2% for pale-to-vivid yellow in transparent engineering resin. Verify in a lab trial at your actual processing temperature before scaling to production.

Automotive interior plastic trim coatings, instrument panel components, metal effect lacquers, and underbonnet applications where the coating must survive elevated temperatures and UV. Also used in industrial stoving finishes and powder coating primer systems where the yellow tint must survive curing temperatures. Compatibility with ketone-based systems suits two-component polyurethane coatings commonly used in automotive refinishing.

Good compatibility with ketone and ester-based ink resins. Typical loading 1–4% in solvent-based gravure and flexographic inks. The clean neutral yellow develops clearly in transparent inks without the greenish cast of standard yellows — this is important in spot-colour and process-colour applications where colour accuracy is specified. Suitable for outdoor signage inks, high-value packaging, and long-run jobs where consistent colour across the full press run is required.

In transparent engineering plastic: 0.02% for pale lemon tint; 0.1% for medium yellow; 0.2–0.3% for deep gold. In solvent-based lacquer at 100 g/L dry film: 0.5–1 g/L for pale yellow tint; 2–4 g/L for vivid yellow. Actual depth depends on film build and substrate colour. For opaque systems with white pigment, significantly higher loading is needed to develop visible colour.

Light fastness 6–7 (ISO 105-B02). Suitable for applications with moderate to significant outdoor UV exposure — architectural building profiles, outdoor furniture components, and building cladding coatings.
