Acid Black 1 — Product Overview

Acid Black 1 is one of the most produced acid dyes in the world. Its reputation isn't built on novelty — it's built on decades of consistent performance across wool, silk, nylon, leather, and paper applications. For dye houses working with wool tops or nylon carpet, it is often the first black they reach for, and the reason is straightforward: it exhausts reliably in an acidic bath, levels well even on fibres that are notoriously difficult to shade evenly, and delivers a deep, clean black without the process complexity of metal complex dyes.

As a levelling acid dye, Acid Black 1 dyes at pH 2–4 with formic or acetic acid as the acid source. No heavy salt is needed — the bath is kept simple. Sodium sulphate or a commercial levelling agent controls the strike rate on sensitive fibres like wool and nylon. It penetrates leather well under drum dyeing conditions and gives a solid cross-section colour. At Yobai Industries we supply it as ACID BLACK 10 BX — shade strength and solubility tested on every batch before dispatch.

Solubility & Dissolution Guidelines

Acid Black 1 dissolves well in warm water — around 40–60 g/L at 40–50°C. Never add the powder directly to a boiling dye bath. The correct method is to make a paste in cold water first, then bring up to 40–50°C with continuous stirring until fully dissolved. Filter through a fine mesh before adding to the bath — undissolved particles settle on the fibre surface and cause spots that cannot be corrected after dyeing.

Do not pre-dissolve in acidic solution (i.e., don't add acid to the stock solution). Keep the dye stock neutral and acidify only in the main dye bath after the goods have been added and the temperature has started to rise. This avoids premature strike and gives the levelling agent time to work.

Dissolution Best Practices

  • Paste the powder in cold water before adding hot water
  • Bring to 40–50°C with continuous stirring
  • Filter through a fine mesh screen before adding to bath
  • Do not pre-dissolve in acidic water — acidify in the main bath only
  • Use dissolved stock within the same dyeing shift for best results

Exhaust Dyeing — Dosage Guide by Shade Depth

All values are for exhaust dyeing on wool or nylon at liquor ratio 1:10–1:20. Adjust acid source and pH based on substrate sensitivity — use acetic acid for lighter shades and sensitive fibres; formic acid for deep shades requiring maximum exhaustion.

Process Notes

  • Temperature profile: Start at 40°C, add levelling agent and dye, raise to 90–100°C at 1–2°C/min over 30–40 minutes. Rapid temperature rise causes uneven strike on wool.
  • Acid addition: Add acid in 2 portions — half at 40°C when goods go in, remainder at 70°C. This prevents premature fixation before the dye has distributed evenly.
  • Leather dyeing: Use at pH 3.5–4.5 in a drum at 40–55°C. Fix with formic acid addition at the end of the dyeing cycle to improve rub fastness.
  • After-treatment: Rinse with warm water, then with a dilute acetic acid rinse (0.5–1%) to stabilise pH and improve levelness before unloading.

Frequently Asked Questions — Acid Black 1

Acid Black 1 is used for dyeing wool, silk, nylon, leather, and paper. It is particularly valued in leather finishing and nylon carpet dyeing for its level, deep black shade. It's also used in ink formulations and paper pulp colouring where a cost-effective black with reasonable lightfastness is needed.

Acid Black 1 dyes at pH 2–4 using formic acid or acetic acid, at 90–100°C. It is a levelling acid dye, so no salt or alkali is needed — just acid and a levelling agent (sodium sulphate or a commercial levelling agent at 10–20 g/L). Raise temperature slowly at 1–2°C per minute to prevent unlevel strike on wool.

Minimum order is 10 kg. Samples (1–5 kg) dispatched within 24 hours. Bulk orders in 7–15 days depending on quantity. We maintain ready stock for standard grades.

Wash fastness is rated 4 (on a scale of 1–5). For applications requiring higher wash fastness — such as machine-washable wool or heavily used nylon carpet — milling acid dyes (like Acid Black 52) or metal complex acid dyes are more appropriate. Acid Black 1 is the preferred choice when levelness and cost are the primary concerns and the substrate won't face aggressive wash conditions.

Yes. Acid Black 1 is anionic and combines well with other anionic acid dyes in the same bath. It is often combined with Acid Black 52 for a cooler, deeper black, or used with small additions of blue or brown dyes to adjust the tone on wool. Compatibility should be checked by running a lab trial — exhaustion rates differ between dye classes and this affects shade reproducibility.

In leather drum dyeing, Acid Black 1 is used at pH 3.5–4.5 at 40–55°C. The lower temperature compared to textile dyeing is intentional — leather fibres are sensitive and the collagen structure can be damaged above 60°C. Add the dye dissolved in warm water to the drum, run for 60–90 minutes, then drop the pH to 3–3.5 with formic acid to fix the dye and improve rub fastness. It penetrates chrome-tanned and vegetable-tanned leather evenly and gives a solid cross-section colour.

Levelling acid dyes like Acid Black 1 strike fast at high temperatures. If you heat the bath too quickly, the dye fixes unevenly before it has time to migrate and level. A controlled ramp of 1–2°C per minute from 40°C to 100°C gives the dye time to distribute evenly across the wool fibre cross-section. Dye houses that rush the temperature step regularly report unlevel results — it's one of the most common processing errors we hear about from customers.

Acid Black 1 is a levelling dye — it dyes under more acidic conditions (pH 2–4) and is easier to achieve level shades with, but wash fastness is moderate (4). Acid Black 52 is a milling dye — it dyes at a milder pH (4–5), offers better wash fastness (4–5), and is preferred for applications where the dyed goods will face repeated laundering or more aggressive use conditions. For general dyeing where cost and levelness are the priorities, Acid Black 1 is the standard choice.

For export shipments, we provide documentation in the format required by your customs or regulatory authority.

Storage & Handling

Store in a cool, dry location below 30°C with relative humidity below 65%. Keep containers sealed — even a partially open bag left in a humid weighing room will absorb moisture and degrade solubility over time. Keep away from strong oxidising agents and alkaline materials. Direct sunlight causes shade drift that cannot be corrected. Check packaging integrity before use and seal immediately after each weighing.

Shelf Life: 5 Years
Guaranteed from date of manufacture under recommended storage conditions (below 30°C, RH below 65%, sealed containers). After 5 years, check solubility and shade strength on a lab sample before committing to production. Yobai Industries provides batch manufacturing dates on all COAs.

Handling Precautions

  • Wear appropriate PPE — gloves and dust mask during handling
  • Avoid inhalation of fine powder
  • Reseal containers immediately after use
  • Request MSDS from Yobai Industries for full safety data
