Acid Brown 75 is one of the most important brown acid dyes for the leather industry, offering excellent penetration, good rub fastness, and a warm natural brown shade. It is widely used in shoe upper leather, automotive upholstery, and wool dyeing. As a milling-class acid dye, it bonds more firmly to the fibre than levelling dyes, translating into better durability under abrasion and washing — a critical requirement for finished leather goods.

In leather processing, drum dyeing conditions for AB75 differ from textile exhaust dyeing. Leather is dyed at 40–55°C — high temperatures are not needed and would damage the hide structure. The bath is acidified with formic acid to pH 3.5–5 for good dye uptake, then dropped to pH 3.5 for final fixation. This two-stage acidification ensures even penetration through the cross-section and improved rub fastness on the finished surface.

On wool and nylon, AB75 performs under standard acid dye exhaust conditions (85–100°C, pH 3–5), producing a warm sienna-to-chocolate brown depending on concentration. It blends cleanly with Acid Black 1 for deeper neutral browns and with Acid Blue 158 for cool-brown and charcoal directions. Its primary application is leather dyeing — shoe uppers, garment leather, and automotive upholstery — where it is valued for penetration depth and rub fastness. It also dyes wool and nylon under standard acid dye exhaust conditions, producing a range of shades from pale tan to dark chocolate depending on concentration.

For chrome-tanned leather, run the drum at 40–55°C at pH 4–5 set with formic acid. Dissolve the dye first in warm water before adding to the drum. Run for 60–90 minutes to achieve good cross-section penetration — check the cut-section if needed. Drop the pH to 3.5 with formic acid in the final 15 minutes to fix dye and improve rub fastness. Float ratio (liquor to leather) is typically 100–150% on weight of leather.

Both are milling acid browns used in leather and textile dyeing, but they differ in shade character. Acid Brown 75 gives a warmer, more red-brown (sienna-like) tone, while Acid Brown 83 tends towards a cooler, more olive-brown. For classic shoe leather and natural-looking brown shades, AB75 is the preferred choice. For khaki-adjacent browns or when blending into greener shade territories, AB83 offers more flexibility.
