Acid Orange 142 — Product Overview

Acid Orange 142 is a milling-class monoazo acid dye with a molecular weight of approximately 563 g/mol, producing a clean, warm orange shade on wool, nylon, and leather under acidic conditions (pH 3–5). Unlike levelling oranges, which are smaller and strike faster, AO142 exhausts more evenly during the heat-up phase and provides better wash fastness at equivalent shade depth — making it the preferred choice for milled wool and nylon carpet where afterwash testing is critical.

In trichromatic acid dyeing, AO142 is the orange component in rust, terracotta, and amber shade recipes. It combines with Acid Brown 75 for warm brown depth or with Acid Black 52 for burnt-sienna and deep rust shades. On leather, it is drum-dyed at 40–55°C with formic acid (pH 4–5) and fixed at pH 3.5 in the final minutes of the cycle, giving a clean bright orange on chrome-tanned hides.

For nylon carpet and hosiery, AO142 dyes reliably at pH 4–5 and 90–95°C with good bath stability. On silk, temperature is held to 82–85°C with ammonium sulphate to protect lustre. Yobai Industries supplies Acid Orange 142 as ACID ORANGE with batch-level colour strength testing and COA on every dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions — Acid Orange 142

Acid Orange 142 is a milling-class monoazo acid dye that produces a bright, clean orange shade on wool, nylon, and leather. As a milling dye, it offers better wash and perspiration fastness than levelling oranges at the same shade depth, and exhausts reliably under acidic conditions without special retarding agents in most applications.

Set bath pH 4–5 with acetic acid and sodium sulphate (15–20 g/L). Enter wool at 50°C, raise to 95–100°C over 30–40 minutes and hold for 45–60 minutes. For knitwear, raise temperature gradually (under 1.5°C per minute) to prevent felting. AO142 exhausts well as a milling dye — most of the exhaustion occurs within the first 30 minutes of the hold phase at 95°C.

AO142 is the orange component in trichromatic recipes for rust, terracotta, amber, and warm brown shades on wool and nylon. Typical partners: Acid Brown 75 (adds red-brown depth), Acid Black 52 (darkens to burnt sienna or dark rust), or Acid Yellow 42 (brightens towards mandarin orange). All are milling dyes that exhaust in the same acidic bath at pH 3.5–4.5. Confirm proportions with a lab trial before production.

For chrome-tanned leather, run drum at 40–55°C, pH 4–5 with formic acid. Dissolve dye in warm water before addition. Run 60–90 minutes. Drop pH to 3.5 in the final 15 minutes with formic acid to fix and improve rub fastness. Float ratio 100–150% on weight of leather. AO142 gives a clean bright orange on chrome leather; on veg-tanned leather the warm tannage background deepens it towards amber-orange.

Yes. AO142 dyes nylon carpet at pH 4–5 using ammonium sulphate, exhausting at 90–95°C for 45–60 minutes. It produces level bright orange shades and is widely used in carpet ranges for rust, terracotta, and burnt orange colourways. The milling character ensures good stability at continuous carpet dyeing process conditions.

For pale apricot, use 0.1–0.5% owf at pH 4.5–5 and 90°C for 30 minutes. For burnt orange, increase to 3–5% owf at pH 3–4 and 100°C for 60–75 minutes. At lower concentrations the shade reads clean warm orange; at higher depths it deepens and shifts slightly redder. Adding Acid Yellow 42 at 0.2–0.5% owf keeps the shade brighter and warmer at any concentration.

Yes, with temperature control. Limit the dyebath to 82–85°C for silk to protect lustre. Use ammonium sulphate instead of acetic acid (pH 4.5–5). AO142 gives a clean bright orange on silk at these conditions. Deep shades may require a slightly longer hold time at 85°C to compensate for the lower temperature. Avoid boiling, which dulls silk and can cause uneven uptake.

For rust (orange-red with brown depth): blend AO142 with Acid Red 114 (adds red body) and Acid Brown 75 (adds warmth and brown depth). For terracotta (muted orange-red): use AO142 with Acid Brown 83 (adds olive-brown) and Acid Black 52 (to knock back brightness and deepen). All are milling-class acid dyes that work in the same bath. Run a lab trial first and adjust with 0.1% steps.
