Acid Red 114 — Product Overview

Acid Red 114 (CAS 6459-94-5) is a bisazo milling acid dye with a molecular weight of approximately 830 g/mol, producing a clean scarlet-to-red shade on wool, silk, nylon, and leather under acidic conditions (pH 3–5). The bisazo structure gives it better wash fastness than simpler monoazo reds at the same shade depth, and the higher molecular weight contributes to improved migration resistance on superwash-treated and chlorinated wool substrates.

AR114 is the standard red component in trichromatic acid dye systems, used alongside Acid Yellow 42 and Acid Blue 113 to cover the full commercial shade gamut on wool and nylon — from pale rose through scarlet, burgundy, and maroon. On leather, it is drum-dyed at 40–55°C with formic acid and fixed at pH 3.5 at the close of the dyeing cycle, giving a clean bright red on chrome-tanned hides.

For nylon carpet and hosiery, AR114 produces bright red and scarlet colourways at pH 4–5 and 90–95°C. On silk, temperature is held to 82–85°C with ammonium sulphate to protect fibre lustre. Yobai Industries supplies Acid Red 114 as ACID RED JV1 with batch-level colour strength testing and COA on every dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions — Acid Red 114

Acid Red 114 (CAS 6459-94-5) is a bisazo milling acid dye that produces a bright, clean red shade on wool, silk, nylon, and leather. It is one of the standard red components in trichromatic acid dyeing systems. The bisazo structure gives it better wash fastness than simpler monoazo reds at equivalent shade depth, and its high molecular weight (~830 g/mol) contributes to good migration resistance on treated wool.

Set bath pH 4–5 with acetic acid and sodium sulphate (15–20 g/L). Enter wool at 50°C, raise to 95–100°C over 30–40 minutes and hold for 45–60 minutes. For knitwear and fine merino, raise temperature gradually (under 1.5°C per minute) to prevent felting. AR114 exhausts reliably as a milling dye — the bulk of uptake occurs between 70–100°C, so good level dyeing depends on uniform heat application.

AR114 is the red component in standard trichromatic acid dye systems for wool and nylon. Combined with Acid Yellow 42 (yellow) and Acid Blue 113 (blue), it covers the full commercial shade gamut from pale pink to deep burgundy, and in combination from green-yellows through browns to navy. All three are milling-class dyes that exhaust under the same acidic conditions, making bath management straightforward. AR114 is also used as a standalone scarlet-to-red in direct shade applications.

Apply to chrome-tanned leather in a drum at pH 4–5, 40–55°C using formic acid. Float ratio 100–150% on weight of leather. Run 60–90 minutes for good cross-section penetration. Add formic acid in the final 15 minutes to drop pH to 3.5 — this exhausts residual dye from bath and improves rub fastness. AR114 gives a clean bright red on chrome leather. On vegetable-tanned leather, the warm tannage shifts the shade slightly towards red-brown.

Yes, with temperature control. Limit the dyebath to 82–85°C for silk to protect lustre. Use ammonium sulphate (pH 4.5–5) instead of acetic acid. AR114 gives a clean bright red on silk at these conditions. Deep red and wine shades may require a longer hold time at 85°C. Avoid boiling, which dulls silk and can cause uneven uptake. A silk-compatible levelling agent helps at concentrations above 1.5% owf.

For rose pink, use 0.1–0.5% owf at pH 4.5–5 and 90°C for 30 minutes. For wine red, increase to 3–5% owf at pH 3–4 and 100°C for 60–75 minutes. At low depths AR114 reads a clean warm red-pink; at high depths it deepens towards red-maroon. To push further into purple-wine, add Acid Blue 113 at 0.2–0.5% owf. To keep a pure red at high depth without bluing, confirm pH stays between 3.5–4.

Yes. AR114 dyes nylon carpet at pH 4–5 using ammonium sulphate, exhausting at 90–95°C for 45–60 minutes. It is used in carpet ranges for red, scarlet, rose, and pink colourways, and is a common red component in burgundy and wine carpet blends. For continuous carpet dyeing processes, the milling character ensures bath stability across the dyeing run.

For scarlet (red with slight orange brightness): blend AR114 with Acid Orange 142 (0.3–0.8% owf). For crimson (red with blue depth): blend AR114 with Acid Blue 113 (0.2–0.5% owf). For dark burgundy: use AR114 with Acid Blue 113 (blue) and Acid Black 52 (to darken). For coral-red: add Acid Yellow 42 (0.2–0.4% owf). All are milling-class dyes that work in the same bath at pH 3.5–4.5.
