Acid Yellow 42 — Product Overview

Acid Yellow 42 is a monoazo milling acid dye with a molecular weight of approximately 489 g/mol, producing a clean, bright yellow shade on wool, silk, nylon, and leather. It operates effectively at a slightly wider pH range (4–6) than most milling dyes, which allows for gentler application conditions on delicate substrates and makes it easier to achieve level dyeing on fine wool counts and silk without dedicated retarding agents.

AY42 is the yellow component in standard trichromatic acid dyeing systems, combined with Acid Red 114 and Acid Blue 113 to cover the full commercial shade gamut on wool and nylon. In olive and khaki recipes, it is used alongside Acid Brown 83 and Acid Blue 158. On leather, it is drum-dyed at 40–55°C with formic acid (pH 4–5.5) and fixed at pH 3.5–4 in the final minutes, giving a clean lemon-to-golden yellow on chrome-tanned leather.

For nylon carpet, AY42 is used in gold, straw, and yellow colourways at pH 4.5–5.5 and 90–95°C. On silk, temperature is held to 82–85°C with ammonium sulphate preferred over acetic acid. Yobai Industries supplies Acid Yellow 42 as ACID YELLOW PN with consistent colour strength and COA on every dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions — Acid Yellow 42

Acid Yellow 42 is a monoazo milling acid dye that produces a clean, bright yellow shade on wool, silk, nylon, and leather. It works at a slightly wider pH range (4–6) than most milling dyes, which allows for gentler application conditions on delicate substrates. It is the standard yellow component in trichromatic acid dyeing systems and also used as a standalone golden-yellow in direct shade applications.

Set bath pH 4.5–5.5 with acetic acid and sodium sulphate (15–20 g/L). Enter wool at 50°C, raise to 90–95°C over 30 minutes and hold for 45–60 minutes. AY42 performs well at pH 5 for fine wool — the higher pH reduces strike speed and improves levelness. For coarser wool yarns and heavy fabrics, lower pH to 4–4.5 and raise temperature to 100°C for complete exhaustion at deep shades.

AY42 is the yellow component in standard trichromatic acid dye systems. Combined with Acid Red 114 (red) and Acid Blue 113 (blue), it provides the full commercial shade gamut on wool and nylon — from pale yellows through greens, oranges, browns, and khakis. In olive and khaki recipes specifically, AY42 is used alongside Acid Brown 83 and Acid Blue 158. Its wider pH tolerance makes it compatible with the slightly different exhaust conditions needed by milling blues in the same bath.

Yes. For silk, limit temperature to 82–85°C and use ammonium sulphate (pH 5–5.5) instead of acetic acid. AY42's wider pH tolerance makes it particularly suitable for silk, where gentler conditions are important. It produces a bright lemon-to-golden yellow on silk at these conditions. A silk-compatible levelling agent helps at concentrations above 1% owf to prevent uneven uptake at the lower temperature.

Yes. For chrome-tanned leather, drum-dye at 40–55°C, pH 4–5.5 with formic acid. Float ratio 100–150%. Run 60–90 minutes then drop pH to 3.5–4 in the final 15 minutes to fix. AY42 gives a clean lemon-to-golden yellow on leather. In leather colour recipes, it is used as the yellow component in orange, khaki, and tan blends alongside browns and oranges. The milling character provides good rub fastness after proper fixation.

For pale lemon, use 0.1–0.5% owf at pH 5–6 and 85°C for 30 minutes. For deep amber, increase to 3–5% owf at pH 3.5–4.5 and 100°C for 60–75 minutes. As concentration increases, the shade shifts from clean cool lemon toward warm golden-amber. At deep shades, a slight orange development is normal. Adding Acid Orange 142 at 0.3–0.5% owf at high depth keeps the shade golden rather than amber-green.

Yes. AY42 dyes nylon carpet at pH 4.5–5.5 using ammonium sulphate, exhausting at 90–95°C for 45–60 minutes. It is used for yellow, gold, and straw colourways in carpet ranges, and as the yellow component in green and olive carpet blends. For nylon hosiery, the milling character provides good wash and perspiration fastness, which is important for body-contact applications.

For khaki (warm yellow-brown): blend AY42 with Acid Brown 83 (olive-brown) and Acid Black 52 (to deepen and knock back). For olive-green: use AY42 with Acid Green 25 (adds green brightness) and Acid Brown 83 (adds earth tone). For military olive: AY42 + Acid Brown 83 + Acid Blue 158 (in small amounts to cool the shade). All are milling-class dyes that work in the same acidic bath. Confirm ratios in a lab trial first.
